Description:
The steamboat "Why Not" with a vertical boiler c1883 (ADOOB). On back of picture it says The steamer "Why Not' owned by West. The boat was originally called the "Fresco" and owned by Charles M.Loring and used for passenger and charter business. It was launched in 1877 captained by Dick R. Cummins. The boat was likely kept at Minnetonka Mills as Loring was the owner of the Minnetonka Mill Company. "Fresco" was still owned by Loring when it was housed at Sampson's Upper Lake House and used in connection with that business. It was reported that the boat was rebuilt one winter likely 1882/83 at Minnetonka Mills as Captain Ebenezer B. West of West Point, Lake Minnetonka announced his new craft "Why Not". The "Why Not" was used as a judges boat by the Minnetonka Yacht Club. The boat was commanded by West's son George M. West from 1884—1888. It was fitted out to accomodate parties of 25—30 for pleasure cruising of the lake in areas where the larger boats were unable to go. The boat continue to operate through the season of 1902. TDOOB by Scott McGinnis.
