Description:
Hotel Kee—way—don Cottagewood, Deephaven. The hotel was destroyed by fire in May 23, 1924. The word 'Keewaydin' is from the Indian meaning Northwest Wind. The structure started out as the Cottagewood Club House in 1885. By 1895, after changes to the building, it was known as the Cottagewood Hotel. Soon after the turn of the century the hotel was re—named the Keewaydin. The streetcar boats made regular stops at the hotel's docks between 1906 to 1926. It also had a 'water coaster' until 1924. According the "Lake Minnetonka's Historic Hotels" "This may have been similar to the 'water slide' or 'water toboggan' at Spring Park where the track over the road was high enough to allow cars to pass beneath it. Youngsters thought it exciting to climb to the top of the slide, place the one—passenger sled on the track, be seated on it and swoop down, to end with a splash in the lake. But fearful parants considered it dangerous and requested its removal."
