Description:
A view of the Blue Line Cafe (1878—1958) from the water. The front of the postcard says "Sunshine Home, Excelsior, Minn." On the back of the picture it says "Band stand on site of casino. Casino had six bowling alleys on first floor Upper floor was a roller skating rink and dance hall. (1) "White House" Hotel Sold to Woman's Club of Lake Minnetonka Blue Line Cafe (2) "Community House" 1st home of the Excelsior Branch of the Hennepin County Library (3) "Sunshine Home" purchased by Minnesota Sunshine Society from W.C.L.M." The Blue Line was originally built on pilings at the foot of Center Street by the Stetson Brothers in 1878. The Blue Line Cafe was named for the wine—stem stern rowboats the hotel rented. The boats had a blue Line around the gunwale. Many Blue Line diners came by boat. In 1903 the building was moved to the next block (foot of Water Street) and operated as a cafe with room to seat 450—500. In later years, when the Excelsior Amusement Park opened in 1924 Blue Line offered snacks and meals and finally was a boat livery. The vacant building burned in 1958. The booth right in front of the large moored boat now stands at the Port of Excelsior. Bay Shore Manor Condos occupy this site. ("Walking The Trails of History")
