Steamboat Image Collection
Description:
A front view of the T.C.R.T. Co. (Twin City Rapid Transit Company) ferry boat "Minneapolis" on it's route from Excelsior to Big Island. This boat was a steam side—wheeler. It was a part of a fleet of three ferries "Minnetonka" and "Saint Paul" being the other two. It was constructed by Captain John R. Johnson at Solberg's Point and launched in 1906. The "Minneapolis" was the first onto Minnetonka when she was skidded out on the ice, waiting for the ice to go out. The ferries ran every 15 minutes transporting people from the streetcar station in Excelsior to the Big Island Amusement Park. These boats were failures and their hulls were stripped away and replaced with longer ones. The Amusement Park closed along with the Streetcar Company's Tonka Bay Hotel in 1911. In trying to replicate the successful stunt of burning the "Excelsior" in 1910, the "Minneapolis" was burned in 1912. ADOOB by Scott McGinnis
