Description:
The "Clyde" at Excelsior dock. The "Clyde" was formerly the "Useless". In 1884 an engine, boiler and 76 foot hull was shipped from Iowa to be assembled at Solberg's Point, Lake Minnetonka. The "Useless" was built for Col. William McCory, owner of the Minneapolis, Lyndale & Minnetonka Railway Company to be used in conjunction with the railroad to the Excelsior docks in 1882. It was powered by the first compound condensing engine on Lake Minnetonka. After a trial run in 1884 when two detriments were found and because Col McCory hadn't christened the boat yet the public referred to the boat as "MCory's Folly" and "Useless". She was finally launched in 1884. He remodeled her and after two years he sold "Useless" in 1888 to Donald A. Kennedy and Howard Trumbull who had operated her in 1887 and had made some changes to her in1887 and renaming her the "Clyde". In 1889 Trumbull became the sole owner. In 1889 because of the low water level of the lake it became increasingly harder to operate the boat on the lake. Because of this the "Clyde" was dismantled and Trumbull transported her to Yellowstone Lake in 1889. He had her reassembled and renamed the "Zillah" and stayed in commission there until 1905.
