Description:
A postcard of the Sunshine Home Excelsior, Minn "White House Hotel, corner Lake & Water St. approaching from the block on Water Street". It is now the site of Haskell's.
The first building on the bluff at the SE corner of Water and Lake Streets was the Jenkins House built in 1866 by Anderson H. Jenkins. In 1872 it was rebuilt by son Grant Jenkins into a 2—story frame house with room for 30 guest. Owned by a Mrs. Simpson and managed by her stepson William, it was called the Simpson House until confusion with the new Sampson House let them to rename it the White House. A new section was added in 1886 about the time Frank Bardwell became the manager. In 1896 another addition gave it its 'L' shape. In 1921 the Woman's Club of Minnetonka bought it. They called it their Community House and prepared one of the rooms for a public library. In 1929 the Minnetonka Woman's Club donated it to the Minnesota Sunshine Society, a philanthropic organization. They converted into a home for the aged. The building was demolished in 1946 and the hill leveled for new commerical buildings. "Lake Minnetonnka's Historic Hotels")
