Description:
A postcard of the Hotel Edgewood, Lake Minnetonka, Minn. It was made in Germany. John W. Mann was known in Excelsior for his boarding house and steamboat. He built Upper lake House on Edgewood Road soon after he bought 400 acres in the area he called Birch Bluff. In 1877 he sold the inn to W.A. Sampson who renamed it Rustic Home. He loved the view of the Upper Lake and its wharf where the steamers stopped. But by 1901 he had moved the building further down Edgewood Road toward Howard's Point and changed the name to Edgewood Hotel. In 1906 the new owner was John Christian. There has been no Edgewood Hotel since Norman Ofstead bought the property in 1947 and took off a western portion of the building. The rest of the hotel was remodeled into a home. He used some of the excess lumber to refurbish the cottages on the lakeshore that are now individually owned. ("Lake Minnetonka's Historic Hotels")
